Comfort at Haynie's Corner

This past weekend the Evansville Culinary Tours visited Haynie's Corner for the second time. It was the same restaurant lineup as before, but different food and all new people.

We met at Waltons International Comfort Food, which, by the way, smelled of smoked pork and pizza as we approached the front door and that set the tone for the next tasty thirty minutes.

Once seated we hoped to sink our teeth into a rare find, the fresh morel mushroom pizza, but it sold out the night before. Instead, we opted for the Fig & Pig Pizza.

The fig part of the clever combo is a sweet fig jam spread on fresh pizza crust. The pig is a smokey, salty pork belly sliced thin and strewn with abandon. The pizza is topped with enough blue cheese and mozzarella to make it all gooey and delightful after a few short minutes in the wicked hot brick oven.

The next stop was the Dapper Pig. I was giddy just thinking about sharing the fried green tomatoes with this new group of foodistas .

The weekly special, Cajun Chicken Quesadilla, came out first and was very good, indeed. Trying not to oversell them, the FGT’s looked and tasted every bit as good as I’d told my lunch mates they would be.

Sam was our server at the Evansville Brewhouse. She enticed a couple of the women in our group to try a light Skinny Blonde brew. Another chose a heartier brew, whose name I wish I’d written down and whose picture I wish I'd taken. (I will get better at this, eventually.) I broke with tradition and went with the pear cider. It is good, not too sparkly and with plenty of pear flavor. Our little group sat on the comfy couches near the front window. Knowing the Evansville Brewhouse doesn’t sell food, I made a unique guava and pecan cheese dip ahead of time and served it with crispy flat pretzels.

The day was sunny and warm, so we walked a few blocks down to Penny Lane for coffees of all sorts. We split a Morning Glory Muffin and a delightful crispy peanut butter chocolate bar. Though stuffed, we managed to enjoy those sweet treats along with our coffees. We sat and talked a bit longer, then made our way back to our cars.

Haynie's Corner restaurants dish up plenty of tasty treats all within a few walkable blocks, and the place smells really good, too.

If you think you might like to take a couple hours out of your day to get the feel and taste of local restaurants, please preregister through the links below and join us on a tour soon. Assuredly, the food is good and the fellowship even better. As a matter of fact, people are making new friends on the tours each week!
